Thanks for your reply. That makes a lot of sense. I've been looking more closely and even the comics that do have "backgrounds" in every panel, it's very simplistic outside the establishing shot. I'm getting ready to start drawing a comic and debating this very question. I suspect I'll end up drawing line-art on paper, scanning it, 'inking' it with a tablet, and cel-shading in The Gimp. I could see this becoming a wearisome routine, however.

I have to agree with Metrius on line weight. One of the perks of using a tablet is that pressure sensitivity makes it very easy to vary line weight.
