Re: I'll review your webcomic.
Thanks for the explanation. I've replied to most of your points in the other thread as well. I think I get your main point about the humour not being conveyed to a general audience... Once again, thank you for taking the time to be so patient and explaining your review. I certainly feel a lot more p...

Re: Scooby's Reviews by Request
You've both made some good points. I am not sure whether I expected a less critical review or not from Scooby, but I certainly felt the need for a second opinion. By the way, I understand how very specific humour can sometimes fall flat if the context is missing. I think that is what you both have i...

Re: Scooby's Reviews by Request
And I've had a pretty hard time with my art. I almost feel like giving the whole thing up because it's reached stagnation and I'm getting no better. The harder I try, the worse it gets. I almost drew better when I used to draw more freely. I think from all the criticisms I've got, I've tightened up...

Re: Scooby's Reviews by Request
Thanks for the review. It's a bit of a blow though, that you've also been largely negative in respect of the "jokes". I assure you that the superficial punch-line is not my attempt at humour. It's the situation itself and how lawyers can relate to them that forms part of it. For instance, in this co...

Re: I'll review your webcomic.
Thanks for the review. Even though it's largely negative - and I do get some of your points, I thought I'd clarify a bit here. Please don't take this as a criticism of your review which I really appreciate for the effort you've put in, but I wanted some context and also I feel that you have been som...

Re: Transitioning between scenes/strips
If you want to change the scenery, then abrupt change is good, isn't it? I'd even go as far as to switch scenes that contrast each other, like have a darkly lit scene follow a bring one, or have outdoor scene follow an indoor one, or switch one with few details for one with cramped background. If I...

Re: Does monochrome work better for my comic?
I thought it matched the satirical theme of my comic better than full colour. Yes, if I decide on monochrome for the future ones, I would probably use a limited palette at the colouring stage, rather than colouring it fully and then reducing it to greyscale/sepia.

Re: Transitioning between scenes/strips
Thank you for the replies. @Harishankar: I have a chronological outline of the comic I'm working, although it only lists the events. I make the character reaction/development as I go, which is like running on shaky ground. Again, I'm not sure if what I'm doing is right. @McDuffies: Would only being...

Does monochrome work better for my comic?
Since I've published only six episodes as of now, I'm still looking to improve in some areas. Firstly, I've been colouring all my comics in full colour. But now, after finishing my latest one (as yet unpublished), I tried to "colour down" my comic: test-monochrome.png Now this was fully coloured, bu...

Re: Transitioning between scenes/strips
Do you work off a written script? I think it's always better to use a script before you put pencil on paper. For a long time, I avoided written scripts, but because I was writing more a gag-a-day format, I could get away with it somewhat. But even then, I have realized that a script from which you c...

Re: Stumbling block with backgrounds and composition
Hey, thanks for those tips. By the way, that was not a house I intended, it was a courtroom building; and also those were not windows, they are supposed to be fenced-off archways with a bit of embellishment. :P As for the perspective correction, those lines you drew were really useful. I always find...

Re: Stumbling block with backgrounds and composition
Thanks for the tips. Here's an attempt at a background for the episode I am currently in the process of creating. sample-bg.png I tried to add a branch of a tree to introduce some interest in the scene. Not sure if it has come out all that well though. Can you tell me whether this kind of approach w...

Stumbling block with backgrounds and composition
I have a problem which I am not able to define correctly. But it's got to do with backgrounds. And scene composition. And yes, I am not artistically trained. And I suspect that might have a lot to do with it. Backgrounds - they look really easy and obvious when I see the finished artwork of talented...

Re: 14 ways to spot a bad critic
Some excellent points, all. Years ago I would have kinda agreed with you, but nowadays I disagree. I think that art can go a long way towards interpreting the script in one way or the other. Only yesterday I read a french serial which switched artists midway and to my surprise turned from barely rea...

Re: 14 ways to spot a bad critic
Good points those. Well, anyway, to narrow down this discussion to how I myself would spot a bad review, here are my views: 1. Reviewer admits not to making an effort to read the comic archive because a few of them are very bad. -- maybe the comic creator had an off-day. We all do. Not everybody can...

Re: I'll review your webcomic.
I like your review style, and I want to ask if you would be kind enough to review a webcomic that's still fairly new. I'd like an outside view of it and also some suggestions on how I can improve as I go along. Link here archives: http://harishankar.org/blog/category.php/legalease-reloaded-comic Lat...

Re: 14 ways to spot a bad critic
Assuming for a moment that we all agree about the freedom issue and that everybody has it, can we go further? That wasn't an aguemental point on my behalf, thus far I've been happy to agree with both sides of this discussion at the same time. The posts are all too long for one thing. :shucks: Ah, n...

Re: 14 ways to spot a bad critic
I notice it's also remarkably easy to douse any debate with the freedom of speech thing. They've got their freedom of speech, they can say what they want: debate over. Quite simply, instead of discussing a topic at a higher level, we end up debating freedom of speech and then it becomes a circular a...
