If I was going to draw a crowd, I try to make the first couple of layers of people simplified when compared to the main characters in the panel, with the next layer even more simplified, with the remaining just vague outlines.

When I do an inked pic, I don't bother with penciling in lines, I just ink them.

I have one of my main characters Bronco listed as a character- also, I like to make multiple sketches of a scene so I can have detailed references for the background.
