I say get your own server. They aren't too expensive if you don't need to much traffic. Then get some ads on it, put a donation button on the site, and the server should pay itself.

I think project wonderful ads are normally quite discrete, especially if you choose the smaller ones. Although, I have discovered a lot of nice comics and websites through those ads, so they don't really bother me.
