Re: The freakish size of Nancy Reagan's head.
My Dad went to the Naval Academy in Annapolis with McCain. They were in the same class, '58. (My Dad was a bit higher in the class ranking, BTW) My Dad went to Vietnam as a Marine back in '64. He's talked often with McCain at tailgate parties and other alumni functions. The class of 58 alumni is ver...

Re: Hand Drawn Vrs Digital
Either works for me if it's good. Weak traditional or weak digital is still just weak. I can't do 100% digital myself. One-offs yes, but anything sequential has to be hand drawn. My one gripe about 100% digital cartoons is consistent line width. Things look too static if everything has the same line...

Re: Son of Mac Maybe?
Well, the new (used) video card has lasted about a year and is now starting to fail. I'll be looking at those rumored new MacBook pro models that are supposed to come out in September. I know PC laptops are cheaper every day but I really want to go back to Mac.

Re: George Carlin dies at 71
I got George's "Class Clown" album back in the early 70's and got in trouble over his "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" routine. My parents didn't seem to mind me listening to the seven words, they just objected to me bringing every other kid in the neighborhood in to listen to it. Bye G...

Podcast Review!
The nice folks at at the Webcomic Beacon have reviewed OSS in their latest podcast! Episode 29 has a very kind review by Mark Savary at about 54:50 into the podcast. Later, at about 1:08:22, the three hosts of the podcast, Fes , Tanya , and Aaron , talk some more about OSS. Two for the price of one!...

Surfwise.
Dr. Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz takes his wife and nine kids and creates the gypsy surfer life for better and worse. It's an indi film so it's not in the major movie houses. It can make you sad you didn't grow up that way and happy you didn't.

Merchandise!
I'm thinking of offering some OSS merchandise, T-shirts, books, stickers, etc. What kinds of things would you-all be interested in? Maybe I could do custom wallpapers or icons? Give a shout out for your favorite kind of comic memorabilia! Leave comments here or email them to me. The email link is on...

One Small Step is Two!
OSS is two years old today (May 1). I've been able to keep it going for over 230 strips, one layoff, and two new jobs. Guess I mean it.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Saw Juno several months ago. Very good. Saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall this past Friday. Not a great film but a lot of fun. We may have been biased in our opinion since it's set in Hawaii (we have relatives there and love to visit), we didn't have the kids for a couple days and were just a "couple" a...

Re: Why are we doing this?
I've always wanted to do a comic strip.
Every once in a while I get a fleeting glimpse of how I could be the next Schulz, Watterson, Herriman, or Kelly if I could only get what's in my head down on paper. (sigh)
On a daily basis, I just do it for fun (I’m a much better artist in my head).

Drawing larger and scaling down works well for me. Scaling down makes your line work appear better than at actual size.

Congrats! (coming up on two years myself)
I like today's comic. That meconium is some rude stuff, although I find myself thinking fondly of those times every time I ask my middle-schooler to clean his room.

Re: Making webcomics are higher dpi or resolution or w.e
Are you working at a larger size and scaling down? Usually artwork is done several times larger than the final web-ready size. I don't know Sketchbook, maybe the problem is how you scale the file down? What size and resolution are you working at? Can you show a section of your original artwork? (Lot...

Re: Webcomics: the Future of Print vs Web
Raffiki says "Change is hard." I think the amount of syndicate cartoonists who earn high six figures (and are not Jim Davis or Scott Adams etc.) is dropping. I remember hearing somewhere that you needed 200 newspapers to make enough to quit your day job. I don't know if that is true, but if it is, I...
