This is basically what I mean by the 'leaf' analogy, in which you show a rough blob of a form and occasional definition. I'm a fan of that crowd method too. A few people fully defined, and the suggestion of the rest. I also have a game I play with the few defined "extras" in a crowd. I think of som...

I took a year of studio lifedrawing in university, before I dumped my fine art path for graphic design. It was definitely valuable in learning anatomy, developing observation skills, etc. I'd really reccommend doing an introductory figure-drawing class. However! I also had a lot of frusturation with...

Today's actually my five-year mark, and I didn't think far enough in advance to plan anything. Oh well.

Word on stepping back and enjoying each day. I really feel like I'm in a good mental place with my comics right now. A couple of years ago, I used to be weirdly anxious about things like Webalizer numbers and being popular on the internet , and being better than so-and-so but not as good as whatsher...

Another good thing to gauge it by is whether there's a demand for it. If people are asking for a forum, it's probably not a bad idea. I've had several forums in my time...my old comic had a Keenspace one (back before they installed phpbb, when each subforum could have its own color scheme and title ...

My paper has necromanced Calvin too. I have mixed feelings about this. It's one of the finest newspaper strips ever made, and it tends to outshine almost everything else on the page. But the precedent of infinitely rerunning classics rather than taking a gamble on new material is just depressing. Th...

I've gotten those a few times, and it does annoy me when it looks like a form letter. I remember I once typed out quite a positive response to someone, and then edited it way down into almost nothing when I realized the original message, upon closer inspection, had nothing specific to me in it and w...

I creep myself out all the time.

There was one bad instance where I kind of had a "I can't do this!" breakdown...but in working through that I came up with a better direction to take for the difficult page. So it all worked out.

I really don't think she meant it as a "vote for me" rank-climbing scam...she just wanted some feel-good comments. Do the comments even factor into the rankings? But yeah, there are better ways to get feedback and good advice that people won't think look kind of scammy - and asking for a crit on the...

Woo, design crit! I'm totally itching to go back to school. As PeppermintAfterlife pointed out already, my biggest issue is with the type - and mostly that "a play by David-Matthew Barnes" block. Whatever funky font that is works in the main large title (it's big enough there to be legible, and ties...

There's a vague approximation of me in the foreground with the star shirt and glasses in the last panel of this comic from a little over a year ago. Glasses, messy dark hair...check. And though it barely ranks in the geek derby, it's worth pointing out that on the same page, the girl with her back t...

I've hated E.T. irrationally pretty much my entire life. It all comes back to this: when I was a preschooler, we watched E.T. while my mom was in the hospital, and I was sick with the flu or something. I remember finding the title character extremely unpleasant to look at, and partway through the mo...

I want to do a couple of short-form stories in between Intershadows and the next big project.
I'm thinking the next major thing I do might be a silly-macabre kids' fantasy story. Something that's heavy on imagination and is sans all the depressing adult themes I'm working with now.

Mine not only know, but are the kind of vocal readers who show it to other people and have comments whenever I talk to them on the phone. It seems like it should feel weird, since the story is quite dark and nasty at times. But it doesn't. I get an occasional "whoa!" or "tsk!", but I know we're cool...

Yeah - but just the white cats with blue eyes. They have a total lack of pigment, and that's somehow genetically linked to deafness.

Lily isn't deaf, though - and it's probably because of her one green eye. I'm curious if that's also the case with Mimo's cat.

Thank you. :D

I hope my post above wasn't interpreted as fishing for feedback - the farthest thing from my mind. Reading through this topic made me reflect on how I approach reviews and crits, and how oddly different my approaches are when it comes to my comics versus everything else I do.

I haven't had a real negative review in four years (save for a couple bad offhand comments here and there) It's not that my stuff is TOO GOOD and everybody loves me. No, I'm just the queen of flying under the radar...and I'm not proud of that. I'm a design student (and I started out in fine arts), a...

Ha ha! That's really great. I remember the Killroy one he did some time ago. What does he use, anyhow? He generally uses a pre-existing figure as the base and adds onto it with Sculpy and paint. I think this Jenny used to be an April O'Neil. She stands on my computer monitor, keeping constant watch.

Good topic. I didn't make this, Justin did, but...customized Jenny Damien action figure. http://coolville.intershadows.com/images/morejen.jpg He's also scuplted me a shadowbunny, and a Denny (which was subsequently decapitated by my cat o_O). I adore the sculptures that have been posted - I wish I c...
