Yes, that's right, it's Rowan Atkinson's birthday today. Woot and woot.

Universe-bestriding Conflict (and lack thereof)
Because the StTW writers are a bunch of weenies who fear conflict and drama like Shaggy and Scoob fear flourescent-painted monster suits. We offered the Archie Comics people a story with meat to it, and their reaction was not positive. I suppose I should find out if Tom The Fanboy still has it posted.

Candy! Huh! Good God, y'all! What is it good for?
I've found that a five-pound bag of Tootsie-rolls is an excellent debating tool.
If you can get enough velocity on the candy, anyway.

Mimi is disturbingly like C-ko.
Speaking of which, I really wish A-ko had slapped her around a bit.
And this is why it's a good idea to pack a cooler when you go to a con. Or charm your way into some pathetic fanboy's room and raid his honor bar.

"Mine Eyes Have Seen The..."
You realize, of course, that now you're obligated to show us "the comic that made Robin Williams' eyes explode."
I've seen Tim's interpretive dancing. I can take it.

Emmy:
Meighan from FANS! wanted me to tell you that she can pencil you in for Thursday.
And bring the sword.
Greg
PS -- She also bribed me not to pass on Tim's message.

The new boards still suck
It took me nine minutes from the time I hit the "reply" button to the time I got to this screen. The old boards worked. The old new boards (new old boards? mesoboards?) crashed too damn often, but when they were up they actually worked. This, though... nine minutes is good time for this board. At FA...

I thought the story as a whole was alright, and I was glad they didn't wimp out on killing popular characters once they'd set up a situation that demanded it. However, I found the maudlin, cliche pandering at the end of the episode insulting. "Gosh, they were wonderful. They were heroes. Heroes make...

Newspapers both northern and southern would reprint articles from other papers -- including articles from the other side. The article about the fight at Billberg is reprinted from a Richmond newspaper. Washington was a southern town at the outbreak of the war, especially in its "upper crust," but th...

I've thoroughly enjoyed almost everything I've read by Harry Turtledove. He also does good historically based fantasy and straight science fiction, though he's best known for his alternate history. I have a copy of 1632. A bit fluffy, but lots of fun. A sequel (imaginatively titled 1633 ) is due out...

If Lincoln issued the proclamation when the Union was reeling from defeat after defeat, it would seem like an act of desperation. "We can't beat the south, so let's start a bunch of bloody slave uprisings to weaken them enough that we can recover" (which is how the south viewed the proclamation anyw...

Regional differences in literacy weren't necessarily north-south. Frontier areas had much lower rates than established areas. New England, with a well-established public school system, had very high literacy rates. Other areas, especially those with large immigrant populations, were lower. Fun fact:...

The issues Ghastly and ShatteredTower bring up are ones that have troubled me for a long time. Was the war brought on by a "blundering generation" that could have solved their problems peacefully if they'd put some effort into it, or was the war inevitable? Did every drop of blood drawn by the lash ...

The court heard the arguments earlier, and chose not to issue a decision in 1856 because of the delicacy of the presidential election. They waited until just after the innauguration. I'm not keen on Taney myself. He ruled consistently against national power (except when it was excercised against bla...
